2020 MLK Weekend Logo

Every year the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) hosts a weekend full of programs honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was asked to create a logo according to the theme for the weekend, which was "Read, Write, and Resist!"

Reference Photo

Dr. King valued education and saw it as a fundamental tool during the civil rights movement. I wanted to use an image of Dr. King reading would help drive the weekend's theme. I searched online for the image and put it into Photoshop to give it a more grey, grainy effect (see images below).

Creating the Logo

Afterward, I uploaded the newly cropped image of Dr. King into Illustrator. I wanted the title to be bold and surround the image instead of sit next to it.

I played around with different arrangements of the words "Read, Write, and Resist!", added complementary colors (including AAMP's branded purple) , and landed on what you see to your right.

Here is what the final version of the logo looked on their website.
