400 Plus Logo
I was contracted by the African American Museum in Philadelphia to design a logo reflecting Black experiences since Africans first arrived in the English colonies in 1619. When first approached about the project, they really wanted to emphasize the amount of time Africans have been in the colonies and how we continue to progress through all of the prejudice and injustices in this country.
I immediately knew I wanted a graphic font with a plus to symbolize that progression, and I wanted it to be colorful. I found the example on the right through a Google search, which sparked the design direction I wanted to take.
Early Iterations
At first, I wanted to use different shades of brown to represent the spectrum of melanin in Black/Brown people in the Diaspora. By the last iteration, I started gravitating towards using multiple colors instead. The client also asked whether we could incorporate their logo and the color purple to link it back to their organization.
